on the Farm – What is it?
This is a Butter
Mold from the 1910s and 1920s. Estimated
Retail Value $35. In the old
days butter was shipped to the big cities using railroad and steamships.
To keep the butter from getting mixed up with the other butter being
shipped – people would use a mold with a unique marking in order to avoid
mix-ups with the other butter. Butter
was usually shipped in round tubs – thus the mold was the same size as the
container it was shipped in. There
are many different butter molds out there in many different sizes.
If anyone knows for sure if the old steamships around here shipped butter
to market or if the local farmers used to send their butter to market give us a
