This is a Flax Comb from the 1700s and 1800s. Estimated Retail Value $48 - $65 depending on condition. Made of a board and evenly spaced nails. Used to comb or straighten out the flax fibers to make clothing – especially shirts. Ok – Ok what is FLAX? Flax is a fibrous plant, somewhat like sugarcane, which when busted up or broken and then combed out using the above tool can be spun into thread. Once the fibers were straightened they were very similar to the fibers in cotton. The cloth made from flax is called “Home Spun” and today is very valuable. George Washington probably wore a flax shirt in his time. Flax is course in texture– so you would not want to make underwear out of it. Has anyone out there ever used or worn flax made material?
