Back on the Farm – What is it?

These are Country Store Jars from the 1930s or 1940s. Estimated Retail Value for Round Coffee Jar $60 (picture left) and the Planters Peanut Jar with original top is $165 (picture right).  Country stores used to candy and coffee in these jars.  Other jars contained crackers, pickles, pickled eggs, and other special treats.  In the old days the store keeper would tell the children if they were good and were helpful – then they could have something from the jars.  Today, in my antique shop, I tell the children on their visit that if they are good – they can have a free marble.  The kids like it and so do the parents.  And do you know what – its as good for business today as it was then.  Country stores from the 1840’s on used store jars and its has always been a trill for children to look at all the interesting things in them – especially candy.   These store jars vary in price and are now highly collectible.  If the letters are raised or painted on and the condition is good then the jars are more valuable than if they were in poor condition.  If you have any of these jars and you would like to know what it is worth – call call  Holly Hill Antiques 804-695-1146 and we will give you a free appraisal.   We would love to hear your story.
