on the Farm – What is it?
This is a Folding Nursing Rocking Chair from the 1910s and 1920s. Estimated Retail Value $75-$150. Yes we all know this is a rocking chair, but not all rocking chairs were used for the same thing. The particular rocking chair is a “Nursing rocker” because it didn’t have any arms on it. A “nursing” rocker was used by many mothers in the 1800’s and the early 1900’s before the days of baby formula. This one is manufactured but many are handmade and one of a kind. These rockers were made of all kinds of wood and most were usually light-weight so the could easily be moved from room to room. Some even folded up - as does the one pictured. Watch for more on special use rockers in the near future. If anyone has used an antique nursing rocking chair give us a call at Holly Hill Antiques 804-695-1146 or call the comments line at GLO-Clips. |
